Nobody Should Sign a Five-Figure Plan They Were Not Given Time to Understand
Most people arrive here holding a piece of paper. It has a large number at the bottom, a discount that expires on Friday, and somewhere in the middle a line they do not understand. They are not looking for a cheaper option. They are looking for someone with no stake in that particular sale to tell them what it says.
That is a reasonable thing to want, and it is oddly hard to get. A consultation at most implant centers is a sales appointment, so bringing a rival's paperwork into it is awkward by design. We do the opposite: bring it, and we will go through it item by item against a 3D CBCT scan of your own jaw, and tell you what the plan covers, what it leaves out, and which parts would look different if it were built from your anatomy instead of an average one.
There is no charge, and there is no obligation to treat with us. Some people leave and go ahead with the original plan, better informed. Some discover they were quoted for grafting they may not need. Some find out the surgeon named on the plan is not the person who would actually operate. All three are useful outcomes, and only one of them ends with us doing the surgery.

The Six Questions That Tell You Whether a Quote Is Comparable
The Six Questions
Implant quotes are difficult to compare because no two practices itemize the same way. One quotes the finished tooth; another quotes the post and bills the abutment, the crown, the imaging and the temporaries separately. Both hand you a single number. Only one of them is telling you what you will pay.
So before comparing totals, make every plan answer the same six questions. Who is the named surgeon? What is included — implants, abutments, final teeth, imaging, post-operative visits? What is billed separately, and at what fee? How many implants per arch, and what happens if your bone needs more? Who manufactures the teeth, and where? And who is responsible in five years when a screw loosens? A plan that answers all six in writing can be compared with any other plan that does. A plan that answers two of them cannot be compared with anything — and that is usually the point.
Ask us the same six questions. That is the actual test of whether a practice is being straight with you: not whether it will criticize a competitor's plan, but whether it will submit its own to the identical scrutiny. Ours is itemized by default, the surgeon is named, and the warranty is honored by the two people who did the work.

What Changes a Plan
The Three Things That Most Often Change a Plan
The first is grafting. Being told there is not enough bone for upper implants is common, and grafting first is frequently the right answer — but it is not the only one. For severe upper-jaw bone loss, zygomatic implants anchor into the cheekbone and can carry fixed teeth without a graft and its months of healing. Whether that applies to you is a question a 3D scan answers in minutes.
The second is implant count. Some plans commit to four implants per arch and price additional ones as an upgrade. Bone does not negotiate: the number your arch needs is set by your anatomy and your bite forces, not by a package tier. We place as many as the case requires — often six to eight on a full arch — without a per-implant charge, which is a structural difference rather than a discount.
The third is who is actually going to operate. It is worth asking directly, and worth asking whether that person will be there for your follow-ups, because the fifteenth year of an implant is when continuity stops being an abstraction. If a plan cannot name the surgeon, that is not a small omission. We also treat and rescue failed implants placed elsewhere, which is the same skill applied later and far more expensively.
Second Opinions — The Questions People Actually Ask
Will you really look at another practice's implant quote?
Yes, and we do it every week. Bring the written treatment plan you were given — printed, emailed, or photographed on your phone — and we will go through it with you line by line: what each item is, what it does for you clinically, what is missing, and which parts would change if the plan were built from your own anatomy. There is no charge for this and no obligation to treat with us. Plenty of people leave having decided the original plan was fine, which is a perfectly good outcome. What we will not do is tell you a plan is wrong because someone else wrote it.
What does a second opinion actually involve?
The same free first visit every patient gets. You meet the doctor who would perform your surgery — not a treatment coordinator working from a script — and we take a medical-grade 3D CBCT scan where it is clinically appropriate, so the conversation starts from your actual bone rather than from a photograph or a panoramic X-ray. Then we read your existing quote against that scan. You leave with your own written plan and your original paperwork, annotated. It takes about an hour.
Why do implant quotes change after the scan at some offices?
Usually because the first number was never a quote. A figure quoted before anyone has seen your bone is an estimate for an average mouth, and an average mouth does not need the extraction, the graft, or the sinus lift that yours might. When the scan finally happens, those items appear, and the total moves. That is not necessarily dishonest — but it is avoidable, and it is why our sequence is the other way round: the free scan happens first, and the number you are given afterwards is the number. If a quote you are holding came before any 3D imaging, that is the first thing to ask about.
What should I check on any implant quote — including yours?
Six things. Does it name the surgeon who will actually operate, or only the practice? Does the price include the implants, the abutments, the final teeth, the imaging, and the post-operative visits, or are those separate lines? Are extractions, bone grafting, sinus lifts, and sedation itemized with their own fees, or absorbed into a phrase like 'all-inclusive'? How many implants does it commit to per arch, and does that number change if your bone needs more? Who makes the teeth, and where? And who honors it in five years when a screw loosens? A plan that answers all six in writing is a plan you can compare. One that does not is a brochure.
Does a lower number mean a worse result?
Not by itself, and not automatically the reverse either. Price differences between implant practices mostly come from structure rather than from quality: franchise fees, outside dental labs, and visiting surgeons all add cost that ends up on a patient's invoice without adding anything to the surgery. We are family-owned, and the planning, the guided surgery, and the CAD/CAM lab that mills the teeth are all in one building in Fremont, which removes those markups. What you should judge is not the total but what the total buys — the six questions above are a better test than the number at the bottom.
I was told I need bone grafting before implants. Is that always true?
Often, but not always, and it is one of the most common reasons a second opinion changes a plan. Grafting adds months of healing and its own cost, and for an upper jaw with severe bone loss there is sometimes an alternative: zygomatic implants anchor into the cheekbone and can support fixed teeth without grafting first. Not everyone is a candidate, and the honest answer for many people is that grafting genuinely is the right route. But you should know both paths exist before committing to a year of treatment, and a 3D scan is what settles it.
What if I have already paid a deposit somewhere else?
Come anyway. A deposit is not a clinical commitment, and knowing what you actually need is worth an hour regardless of what happens next. We have no interest in talking anyone out of treatment they are happy with; what we see more often is someone who was quietly uneasy about a plan and wanted a professional read before the surgery date. Whether you proceed there, proceed here, or wait, you will leave understanding your own scan — and refund questions are between you and that practice, which we will say plainly rather than pretend otherwise.
