Your maxillary sinuses are air spaces sitting directly above your upper back teeth. When those teeth are lost, the bone below the sinus thins and the sinus itself expands downward — often leaving too little bone to anchor an implant. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus membrane and places graft material beneath it, rebuilding the bone height an implant needs. It's one of the most predictable, well-studied procedures in implant dentistry.
Often, yes. When your remaining bone beneath the sinus is sufficient to hold the implant firmly at placement, we lift the sinus and seat the implant in a single visit — the graft and the implant then integrate together, saving you a second surgery and months of waiting. When the remaining bone is too thin for stability, staging is the right call: graft first, implant after integration. Your CBCT scan makes the call before anything is scheduled.
Patients routinely tell us it felt like less than a tooth extraction. The procedure is done under local anesthesia — IV sedation available — and afterward you'll follow simple precautions for a couple of weeks, like avoiding forceful nose-blowing while the membrane settles. Done properly, a sinus lift doesn't change breathing, sinus function, or your voice for the vast majority of patients; it simply gives the floor of the sinus a stronger foundation than it had.
Three ways. First, we measure everything on an in-house 3D CBCT scan — sinus anatomy, membrane, residual bone — so nothing about your sinus is a surprise mid-procedure. Second, X-Guide™ and Navident EVO navigation place the implant with sub-millimeter accuracy in exactly the bone we planned. Third, when the upper jaw is too far gone for grafting to make sense, we also place zygomatic implants — anchored in the cheekbone, bypassing the sinus problem entirely.
