Before you sign

Review this document before your appointment when possible. Your treating dentist must still explain the patient-specific treatment, benefits, material risks, alternatives—including no treatment—and answer your questions. Do not sign after receiving sedating medication.

Proposed treatment

Nitrous oxide is a gas breathed through a small nose mask that reduces anxiety and is reversed within minutes of stopping. An oral sedative is a tablet or liquid taken before the appointment that produces a longer-lasting relaxed state. Either may be used alone or together, and local anesthetic is still required for the dental work itself.

The intended level is minimal sedation, in which the patient remains able to respond normally to speech. Individual response varies, and a patient may become more deeply sedated than intended, which is why the same monitoring and escort rules that apply to deeper sedation are applied whenever an oral sedative is used.

Material risks and possible complications

  • Drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, tingling, or a prolonged period of feeling unsteady.
  • Reduced memory of the appointment, impaired judgement, and impaired coordination lasting the rest of the day after an oral sedative.
  • Deeper sedation than intended, with slowed breathing, low oxygen, airway obstruction, or aspiration, requiring supplemental oxygen, reversal medication, or emergency care.
  • Allergic or unexpected reaction to the medication, and interaction with alcohol, cannabis, opioids, or other sedating medicines.
  • Inadequate sedation, so that treatment must be delayed, stopped, or completed with a different anesthesia plan.
  • Nitrous oxide is avoided or used with caution in pregnancy, in some vitamin B12 deficiencies, and in certain lung, ear, or sinus conditions.

Patient safety requirements

  • Disclose all medicines, supplements, alcohol, cannabis, recreational drugs, possible pregnancy, sleep apnea, and any recent illness before sedation.
  • Follow the office’s fasting and medication instructions exactly.
  • If an oral sedative is used, a responsible adult must escort the patient home and supervise as directed, and the patient must not drive, work, sign important documents, drink alcohol, or operate machinery until the office’s restriction period has ended.
  • Consent must be completed while the patient has decision-making capacity and before any sedating medication is taken.

Reasonable alternatives

  • Local anesthesia alone, intravenous sedation, deeper anesthesia when indicated, staged shorter appointments, behavioral techniques, referral, or no treatment.

California Proposition 65 warning

WARNING: Certain dental procedures performed in this office can expose you to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm or both.
